In 1999 we saw our mother fall ill and begin to deteriorate week by week. Multiple visits to the doctor failed to pinpoint the problem. We saw her mental abilities fail bit by bit until a sustained conversation was nearly impossible. This was chalked up to old age dementia ("possibly Alzheimers" we were told) and we were advised to accept it as part of old age.

Finally her bodily functions began to fail. She developed incontinence, chronic diarrhea, a racing heartbeat, and weakness so profound she could barely walk ten feet to the bathroom and needed to hang onto the furniture and the walls to achieve that. It was fear of losing her that led us finally to searching the scientific journals over the internet for an answer. The medical establishment seemed resigned to let her die. Their stock answer was to pour more and more antibiotics through her system with no positive results.
